Starting up services in your area

Starting a chapter of SAFE (The SAFE Chapter Manual)

Interested in starting a local chapter of SAFE? Chapters of SAFE set up local services, such as hotlines, support groups, and court advocacy programs. They also advocate in their area for services that support groups that typically don't receive services, such as abused men, gay and lesbian victims, the elderly, and teens.

Is it a lot of work?

Setting up a chapter is a large committment, but it is also something that can be done gradually. You don't have to devote your entire life to starting up a chapter, but you will need to consistently contribute time towards making it happen.

What is the reward?

The work is extremely rewarding, partially because there are simply so few services available, that every bit of effort you contribute makes a large difference. It is hard to describe what it feels like when you hear someone tell you that your efforts saved their life and/or sanity.

Who do SAFE chapters serve?

We focus on providing services equitably, so generally our support groups and services are provided for any victim of abuse, man or woman, straight or gay. But we also specifically target those who have no services available to them, as a sort of ''affirmative action''. Often these populations do not realize that we are out there, so we reach out to them to let them know we're there.
