Project Superwomen is a four month job training and placement program designed to help domestic violence survivors from New York City qualify for and obtain entry-level employment in building maintenance, transportation, utilities and the trades. The training focuses on building maintenance and all students participate in math, fitness, job readiness, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, tool safety, painting, tiling, lock repair, and boiler maitenance and repair classes. Weekly counseling groups are also included and case management services are provided. GED classes are available for women without their GED or high school diploma. Please note that Project Superwomen is a WEP site for any participant who receives public assistance benefits in New York City.
Job placement assistance and job retention counseling is provided during and after the program and placement rates have been as high as 95%. Graduates have found jobs as porters at Columbia University, Custodial Assistants at BMCC, Maintenance workers and porters at not-for-profit management companies, Coach Cleaners with Metro North, a Locksmith with Safe Horizon's Project Safe, Utility Workers and Meter Readers with Con Edison, and Apprentices with Electricians Local No. 3 and Laborers Local No.79. The average starting wage is about $11.50 per hour.
