On May 13, 2008, NCFM members Marc Angelucci, Harry Crouch and Fred Sottile were invited speakers at Torrance High School where they spoke before 30 members of the student body government about male victims of domestic violence. This was a counter to the presentation given by an organization that distorted the issue and falsely told the students 95% of domestic violence is male-on-female, a myth that is not supported by any current credible data at all. A father of one of the students, who was outraged by the misinformation given to his son, contacted NCFM, who helped him stage a small protest outside the school and speak at the school board and city council meetings. As a result, the school invited NCFM to present the other side. NCFM discussed the experiences of male victims and why they are neglected and covered up for political and ideological reasons, handed out studies on dating violence including those linked below, explained the history and politics surrounding the problem and why covering up half the violence actually fosters the intergenerational cycle of violence even more. The students were receptive, and some were outspokenly supportive. NCFM also briefly introduced issues like paternity fraud and false accusations of abuse as forms of domestic violence, and briefly introduced other men's issues as well and the men's rights movement overall. NCFM handed out NCFM's flyers and other materials, as well as the following studies/articles: California State University (Long Beach) bibliography by Professor Martin Fiebert (page 1) University of New Hampshire, “Men are More Likely Than Women to Be Victims in Dating Violence, UNH Expert Says.” http://www.unh.edu/news/cj_nr/2006/may/em_060519male.cfm?type=n Journal of Adolescent Health, “Gender Differences in Dating Aggression Among Multiethnic High School Students” (5/08). Thank you to all who helped out and donated toward the travel costs, and to Dennis, the father of the Torrance High School student, who contacted NCFM made it all happen. Well done, folks! 03:09 PM, 21 Jul 2008 by Jade Rubick Permalink | Comments (0)

Erin Pizzey, the woman who pioneered treatment for abused women by setting up Britain's first shelter for victims of domestic violence in the 70s, is now turning her attention to another group of often overlooked victims: MEN.
She is launching an online campaign and research project focused on bringing the issue out in the open, Ms Pizzey is hoping to raise awareness of abuse perpetrated by women against men – a subject she describes as "one of the last taboos". There is no doubt that the time has come for Erin to be applauded for her courage in having stood up to the bias against her open-minded approach to these issues! We think that it's wonderful that she has become "recharged" and we stand with her in this important effort, and hope that SAFE can in some way assist her. Erin Pizzey is a colleague that I am proud to support and one whom deserves credit for standing her ground for so many years...virtually fending off the bullies that dismissed her theories and facts so readily. No longer are there few voices to join with her as in the past. Good luck Erin Pizzey and welcome back to your life's work! 11:29 AM, 17 Jan 2008 by Lee Newman Permalink | Comments (0) Czech national news: men suffer from domestic violence as much as women [www.praguemonitor.com]
"The term of domestic violence does not necessarily have to invoke the picture of a battered woman since the number of maltreated men is almost equal, and every third Czech man has experienced some kind of domestic violence, the latest issue of the weekly Tyden writes."
