This article discusses the very real problems that domestic violence victims face when they try to get help -- often unless there is someone trying to break down the door, they are told that it's not an emergency.

However, the article then concludes:

As a result, this column is not just about my friend; it is about all women suffering from domestic violence.

It is about women who want to feel safe -- for more than a minute -- every moment of the day and night.

Unfortunately, the author assumes that this is something that only happens to straight women. It doesn't -- it happens to men, both straight and gay, and to lesbian women as well.

The author is right: domestic violence needs to be taken more seriously. But why don't we take all domestic violence seriously?
